When the Founder Seiichi was thirteen years old, he was apprenticed to a millet dealer in Tokyo. He worked hard and, when he was twenty-three, he became an independent millet dealer. His business did quite well until the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, in which he lost everything. He remained impoverished for over eleven years.
